When comparing the two coats the curly coat will almost certainly shed less than the wavy coat and may be more suitable for people with allergies.

Bernedoodle Temperament

With the Bernedoodle being a combination of two different breeds, it is common to see traits from both sides of the breeds. You will certainly see the intelligence and ease of training from the poodle side and the affectionate, loving Bernese Mountain Dog trait. Bernedoodles, like Bernese Mountain Dogs, can be a little wary around strangers, so early socialization is important. Something to keep in mind about this breed is that they need a lot of human attention and do not fair well with being alone for very long periods at a time.

Bernedoodle Training

It is certainly recommended to start with training while your Bernedoodle puppy is still young. They are extremely intelligent and easy learners, although they can be a bit headstrong like the Bernese Mountain dog Consistency, patience, and a gentle hand are the key to a well trained Bernedoodle puppy. As a puppy they are eager to learn. Crate training and alone time training are highly recommended, as Bernedoodle’s can suffer from separation anxiety. They will need a multitude of different toys to keep them mentally stimulated.

Bernedoodle Health

Bernedoodles, being a hybrid mix breed are very healthy. A hybrid mix breed is less likely to develop congenital health defects than a purebred due to the gene pool being much larger. That is not to say that is is not possible for a Bernedoodle to develop a health problem, all breeds have the possibility to have health defects. Bernedoodle’s life span 12-15 years.

A good daily walk and plenty of playtime should satisfy your Bernedoodle’s moderate exercise needs. They are just as happy snuggling up on the couch with you as they are outside. They will be more than happy to go hiking, running and even swimming if they’ve picked up the poodles love for water. They enjoy the colder weather and especially love playing in the snow.

Bernedoodle grooming

One of the desirable traits of Bernedoodle’s is that they shed very little making them a perfect candidate for people with allergies. Although they do not shed much they require to be brushed once or twice a week to prevent their coat from matting.  Approximately every two months their coats should be groomed/trimmed. Baths should only be given when necessary. Clipping its nails and keeping the eyes and ears clean are also part of the Bernedoodle’s grooming routine.
